Week 3 of Band Camp

We are down to our last week of band camp and things are going very well. There are several things going on, so please read over the following announcements very carefully.

1) If you missed band pictures, we will have a make up day once school starts or you can contact Mr. Braden (photographer) directly. I have attached his information along with an order form for pictures.

2) We will have marching shoe fittings for students who need them on Mondaystarting at 9:00am. You can pay by cash or credit card. NO CHECKS. The cost will be $37. Bring the payment on Monday. John Flood (shoe vendor) will take the payments not the band directors.

3) Prep days happen on Tuesday for ALL band students. Freshman students go at your scheduled time Tuesday morning from 9- 11:30. All other band members go Tuesday afternoon from 1:30- 4:00. There will be no rehearsal Tuesdayafternoon.

4) We have our first band booster meeting Tuesday evening at 7:00pm in the band hall. Parents please come if at all possible we have very important information to share with you.

5) We will have our marching show debut on Friday at 7:00pm at Farris stadium. It is free and open to the public. Please come and bring your friends, neighbors, cousins, co-workers, strangers, whoever. We are going to have a great time.

Spirit Week Is Coming!

Hello Ram Band!

Week 2 is nearly complete and we more than halfway done with our early morning summer rehearsals!
Next week, we will be having a Ram Band Spirit Week!  We wanted to give you this weekend to get all your supplies so you can be extra prepared for the festivities.  Here is the schedule:
  • Monday– Crazy Sock Day (wear your craziest pair of socks)
  • Tuesday– Twin Day (coordinate with your Spirit Buddy!)
  • Wednesday– Western Day (western style apparel that you won’t overheat in)
  • Thursday- Beach Day (water wings, swim trunks, floaty noodle hats)
  • Friday (half day)- Flashback Day (throwback apparel from a time long ago… )

Band Camp Update

We just finished our first week of band camp and we are off to a fantastic start. I have a couple of things for you.

  1. I have attached an updated band camp schedule (===>Revised 2016 Band Camp Schedule) because we have a change in prep days. All freshman will go through Prep Days on Tuesday, August 9thfrom 9- 11:30. 10th, 11th, and 12th graders will do Prep Days August 9th from 1:30- 4:00.
  2. Our show is entitled “Glassworks” and we need to get a shirt design done ASAP so I can order them. For those of you who are artistically inclined, please submit a design (preferably as a jpeg document) to me by Wednesday, August 3. Anyone can submit a design. Who knows, your design may be the design for our show shirt 🙂
  3. Make sure you submit your medical forms and get in your first $100 assessment fee ASAP.
  4. Practice!!!!!!

Updated Summer Band Schedule!

Hey Ram Band,

I need to make a correction on time for band camp. We will start at 7:00am Not 7:30 for all morning rehearsals. Please make a note of the change. We will start at 7:00AM not 7:30. Sorry, I just noticed it. Go Rams!!!!

Welcome Back Rams!

I hope everyone has enjoyed a peaceful and restful summer. I know you all have been sitting on the couch binge watching Game of Thrones, but it is time to get  ready for camp. Start your squats, sprints, push ups, or just try get ups. Put down the Coke, Pepsi, and Mountain Dew and start throwing back straight H20! This Monday we start guard and percussion camp all week from 1-5.

Summer Band Is Comming!!!

Hello Returning and Future Ram Band Members!

Marching season is just around the corner, so now is the perfect time to get completely prepared for Day 1 of marching band!  Don’t wait to get these things done, otherwise you will find yourself behind.  Get it done now so more fun can be had later!

First, I would like to talk about health.  As many of you experience, the heat is brutal.  To protect every students’ opportunity to perform at 100% during all of our practices, make sure all medications, inhalers, and health precautions are taken well in advance.  Marching band is an athletic activity, and to remain competitive we must be at our top physical condition.  This also includes some physical exercise to prepare for the demands of the season.  Here are a few suggestions to prepare your body:

  • All water, NO soda or juice (seriously, I already lost a decent 4 lbs. just by not drinking soda)
  • Go outside for at least 30 minutes a day in the morning and do some light movement
  • Go outside for at least 5 minutes a day at the hottest part of the day (NO exercise; just familiarize yourself with the heat)
  • Do some indoor aerobics!  Here’s a program to get your heart rate up:
    • 20 seconds jumping jacks
    • 20 seconds high-knee run
    • 20 seconds butt-kick run
    • 5 burpees
    • 20 second mason twists
    • rest for 1 minute
    • repeat 4 times
  • Do some light stretching of legs and core (upward dog and L-Stretches)
  • Drink at least 8 glasses of water a day starting NOW (it takes time for the body to hydrate; if you’re thirsty, YOU’RE ALREADY DEHYDRATED!)

Now, onto equipment.  Now is the best time to get the equipment you need right on time!  Online ordering should get you your supplies by mid-week next week, so you will have a chance to break everything in.  Here is a checklist of equipment, as well as links to where you can buy said equipment:

All Band Member Required Equipment

  • Flip Folders, Lyres, and Flip Folder Sheets (make sure you purchase the correct lyre for YOUR instrument)!
  • Take all broken instruments to Hillje Music or High School Music for repair.  Broken instruments do not warrant us holding your marching spot.
  • Athletic white t-shirts (Walmart, Target, or any store with just white; no graphics)
  • Pencils
  • Athletic shoes
  • Long black sock (knee level)
  • Plain black t-shirt (for under uniform; section and show shirts qualify)

Nice-To-Have Equipment (you will probably want these, but they are not required)

And, of course, make sure to play your instrument plenty leading up to band camp.  Remember how much time we spend playing Concert F?  It is every band directors dream to play Concert F that much.  I never got into this for the “music,” I just wanted to hear that pitch ring in my ears for all eternity.  Please rob me of this joy by practicing LOTS of long tones on your own with a tuner.  30 minutes a day is all you need to ruin my dreams 🙂
